1440 {12} :: Photo Storage

First, appologies. All the photos you’ve seen from me this week are old. You might even recognize some from previous posts. They were all in a file on my desktop and they were the only photos I could access all week. As soon as I post this, I will be “rebuilding” iphoto, as instructed by […]

Mom Photographer - September 28, 2012 - 6:10 am

I have gone through the same situation when I just got lost among files and files of photos. It took me some time and effort to sort them out (well, not completely). I deleted MANY photos and this was the hardest part as I always want to keep all my photos, no matter how bad. I have no idea why that is.

Dina@4LettreWords - September 28, 2012 - 10:21 am

I have a back up drive, but it’s nearly full now. Not sure what the best option is.

Stephanie - September 28, 2012 - 11:00 am

External drive just for pictures. ALL pictures go on it when downloading camera, after we’ve picked the ones we want to keep. They are organized by year, then within that folder month, then they are labeled something like: Halloween or Recital or Hilton Head. If there are videos taken at the same time from the same camera, they go in the same file with the pictures. I have not really adapted to using my phone as a camera…yet, so there aren’t so many photos…maybe only 300 or so…so they are not organized in any fashion.

Molly - September 28, 2012 - 11:15 am

I regularly back up the whole contents of my hard drive onto an external one and cross my fingers the rest of the time. As for sorting them… I have a system but I am fairly sure it only makes sense to me!!!

Mollyxxx

Lori - September 28, 2012 - 11:17 am

Good advice Stephanie,
An external hard drive seems like a good idea. I don’t like deleting old photos even if they are messed up too. <- I'm getting better though.
And finding pic, I know, I've gone through it.

Tiaras & Tantrums - September 28, 2012 - 12:10 pm

I don’t really organize my photos from my phone b/c I take so few

Danielle - September 28, 2012 - 12:34 pm

I have finally found a system that works for me. I have two files set up on my desk top computer and an external hard drive and they are labeled Family Photos and db Images. When I download my photos they all go onto the desk top computer first and sorted into the appropriate file (Family or Professional). I go through the desk top files and purge the ones that are hopeless (right after downloading them). Once this is done I send the files to my external hard drive. From this step I go on to the next step….I have two very powerful flash drives…one for the Family Photos and One for db Images…I copy the external files to each appropriate flash drive. I store the Family Photo (these are categorized by Year/Event/Date) flash drive for future use such as developing and putting in an album…but the db Images flash drive I process on my lap top. I do a second purge on the db images flash drive…only the ones I plan on selling/blogging/manipulating etc. go on this drive…the best of the best if you will. Then I send them to their appropriate categories…Animals/Flowers and Plants/Insects/Boats/Birds…etc. that way when I want a particular photo I know where it is…easy access…and I have three locations where photos are saved (I eventually delete the ones on the desk top after transferring them to a CD…just because I am anal like that). And nothing is saved on my laptop. I work with my family history and I have a huge amount of photos dating back decades so I have had to find a manageable system ;)
For me, it is all about easy access. Hope this helps.

Emily - September 28, 2012 - 2:35 pm

Photo storage, that is tough! I immediately move the photos to the external, only because the computer is on it’s way out, so saving / storing anything on it just seems like a silly idea. Then I go through and star favorites and delete the ones I know I won’t use. Then I save them by year, date, and type. I then have an extra folder of favorites that are must prints so I don’t forget to do that step either!

Patricia Photosbypab - September 28, 2012 - 9:18 pm

Love these shots! I have an external hard drive just for my photos. I gave up on trying to get them organized lol but I know how to find what I want, just takes me a while.

bettyl - September 30, 2012 - 5:04 am

I store duplicates of my photos on an external hard drive and online. They are stored by year, place, then date.

I use Picasa (it’s free) to put captions on all my photos so that I can search for them on the external hard drive and on my computer any time.

Lisa Gordon - September 30, 2012 - 10:10 pm

These images are absolutely beautiful.

I have found that the best for me, is working with 2 external drives, and making sure that I don’t create too many categories. I always, always keep a date with a photo also.

Happy Sunday to you!

What’s Your Story?

Y’all. I cried last night. I cried last night watching X-Factor. I never watch that show. But last night? Last night I watched people while their dreams came true. And I cried. Did you see it? A 15 year old who lived with 20 family members in a four bedroom home. Who sang like it […]

Beautiful shots. I have never seen X-Factor.

When someone asks what your story is, it’s hard to know where to begin!

Katie - September 27, 2012 - 1:10 pm

I always cry when I watch the auditions for the XFactor! And a lot of other stuff too:-) Beautifully lit pictures!

Carol - September 27, 2012 - 1:18 pm

Magnificent photography and yes sometimes we cry ‘for joy’ ~ Life is a road with ‘bumps’ for all ~ I am blessed with both the joys and the sorrows ~ value both ~ good book is The Prophet by Kahil Gibran ~ (A Creative Harbor)

Gorgeous photos….Now your making me sorry I didn’t watch X factor. My life is full of many blessings and sorrows…it has been a journey that has made me a better person.

Buttons - September 27, 2012 - 2:00 pm

Oh I did not see it but I must admit I want to cry now. Yes everyone has a story and that is why I blog and read blogs.
Incredible photos. Thank you for this moving piece. B

Abi - September 27, 2012 - 2:11 pm

What a lovely post and gorgeous photos! My story has been full of joy and tinged with heartbreak- I’ve experienced several personal tragedies (one of which being that my little brother committed suicide at age 16)I’ve been forced to work through feelings of regret and failure- but these painful circumstances don’t define who I am because of the deep hope I have in Christ Jesus. The Bible says that God works ALL things together for the good of those who love him… I have already seen that truth played out in my life!
As that gentlemen said: we all have our own story. I;m new to your blog and I would love to hear your story!

Tamar Strauss-Benjamin - September 27, 2012 - 3:05 pm

Oh I am tearing up just thinking about it! I love that Bruno Mars song too, such a great song for us to hear and believe in!

Karen - September 27, 2012 - 4:23 pm

Magical photos!

alissa apel - September 27, 2012 - 4:32 pm

That’s such a cool video! I try and post a video once a week on Saturdays of a band or singer that is inspiring. Last week this one made me cry: http://youtu.be/0Y7AzNj2s28 another one that made me cry wasn’t a singer at all. It was a person dressed in a bear suit: http://youtu.be/nBxxgyyKwhQ

What’s my story: My mom had a baby before me that passed away from Trisomy 18. My oldest sister is adopted. My younger sister is a carrier of Trisomy 18 just like my mom is. Somehow it skipped me.

I had 2 babies the same time my sister did. Both times I was afraid she’d have a baby that had Trisomy 18 and would they would pass away, when mine would live. That didn’t happen. One of my babies got meningitis and the other had a staph infection in his neck we believe he got that from an ear infection. Both were close calls! They are fine now.

Then my sister had a baby 2 days after my birthday 2 Junes ago. He has Trisomy 18. Only 10% make it past 1 year. He has lived. He’s gone through jaw surgery and other surgeries. Now he has tumors on his kidneys and needs chemo. We’ve taken in the 2 older kids when the little one is in the hospital. It’s hard on the whole family.

Jessica@SweatIsMySanity - September 27, 2012 - 6:05 pm

Funny you ask. As I ran this morning, all alone, no music to distract me…I thought of My Story…I have a few, I rarely share. After almost almost eighteen years I think I’m ready. I finally decided I’m going to bravely share them. On my blog. One at a time. I don’t know if it will help me any, but hopefully it will help just one soul out there who went through the same trial(s). xo,Jess

Tanya - September 27, 2012 - 7:03 pm

Yes, it is SO true.
Everyone has a story.

we don’t think that we
are particularly courageous.

girl my life has been good…aside from a few little life challenges, i’ve been blessed a million times over. i was born and raised in a christian home, asked jesus into my heart as a little girl and married the man of my dreams. i share my home with the sweetest girls and get to do what i love. sometimes i don’t feel like i deserve all i’ve been blessed with. He’s been so good to me.

Gina - September 27, 2012 - 10:33 pm

I hear you- it seems everyone has something in their life that no one else has gone through. Even when I come across someone that is perceived as having an abundance of blessings- I usually find out later that they have endured great struggle or heartache at some point too.

These images are incredibly beautiful!!!!! Love the light & how you made it dance in each shot.

Ruth West - September 27, 2012 - 10:33 pm

Gorgeous content, awesome lighting in those pictures, truly stunning.

Nancy - September 27, 2012 - 11:22 pm

When you said XFactor, I was thinking XFiles. What a doofus.

I have a story, but it’s long. I guess it would help if I knew your story first. :)

rhonda bryant - September 28, 2012 - 12:05 am

Sunday I was in church and felt the sweet presence of my savior. I was full of joy and my heart over flowed. A lady sang a song that she had written “Did I Mention I Love You Too” she was speaking of Jesus. I realized how much I complain and forget to be thankful. When was the last time that I thanked him and said “l Love You Too” So this week I have tried to let my light shine and thank Jesus for all of my blessings. I have also told him that I love him too! My heart has felt a little bit lighter and my smile has been much brighter! I have had a great week.

rhonda bryant - September 28, 2012 - 12:23 am

Adding to my last comment…your pictures simply remind me of how awesome my savior truly is. Thank you for sharing them)

I am a lover of all things story. I am a lover of the deep. I am a lover of beautiful captures. I am a lover of all things turquoise. I am a lover of transparent telling…stories from the deep. This is why I blog about my story of adultery over at spiritualglasses.me You can find layers of me there, my story.
I love your desire to listen, to learn, to engage. It says so much about your heart. Glad I found you tonight. Story is powerful…hope to connect more and to hear of your story.

Tiaras & Tantrums - September 28, 2012 - 3:58 am

I have never watched that show – but have heard of it – love your photos – and we all do have a story for sure!

Hope - September 28, 2012 - 5:07 am

My story is one of hopelessness, loss, sorrow and pain. Now it’s a story of redemption, grace, healing and finding hope. God’s unrelenting love is saving me.

Robyn - September 28, 2012 - 5:56 pm

The Hubby and I got into watching the X Factor last year. I haven’t started watching the new season. I did have it on the TV this week. I will have to start paying more attention.

I have to agree, the personal stories help make the show.

Very neat photos!

The Post in Which I Shamelessy Complain about All The Little Things In Life

I had this amazing weekend trip that I was already to post about. Except I can’t download my pictures from my camera. My computer is fuuuuullll up. I tried to move pictures to my external hard drive. Then my iphoto seized up. Now that spinny little rainbow colored thing is whirring about and I can’t […]

Simply Beautiful….

Southern Gal - September 25, 2012 - 12:03 pm

That’s why I love the listing of blessings. You actually see the little things to be thankful for even though I do take them for granted at times.

Where do you store all your photos when your computer is fuuuuulllll up? I need to know. I have an external hard drive, but I keep a copy on there and my computer plus edited ones of the same shots. Some are blog size and then I have to change the size for prints. Am I doing this all wrong? I’d love to know how you do it. ;)

Tamar Strauss-Benjamin - September 25, 2012 - 12:40 pm

I love the last two lines. What a way to approach each day!

emily - September 25, 2012 - 2:51 pm

I have been having computer issues, and it’s so frustrating! I hope you get all your photos moved and don’t lose anything. I was able to save all my photos but lost about 90% of my scrapbooking stuff, though I’m okay with that…just another project for another day.

Jessica@sweatismysanity - September 25, 2012 - 5:18 pm

Hey Girl,

Keep your chin up. Yes, we are blessed beyond messure but it’s OK to feel frustrated, annoyed and bummed…we’re only human. You’re such a giving, humble & genuinely good person, you need not worry about ever sounding ungrateful. Still trying to catch my breath after my trip. I’ll email/text asap…phone problems, so I can relate. :) xo, Jessica

Oh, To Loathe Running

I {hate} running. Completely loathe it. So I decided I would go for a walk instead. It’s very hilly where I live, and it took no time at all for my heartrate to soar and the sweat to run. I could even feel my gluts and calves contracting as I pushed to lengthen my stride. […]

Oh no. It’s begun and and there’s no turning back. Yes! It’s addictive…just wait ’til you run your first race. You’ll be hooked for life! That’s exactly how I started out…just a walk I’d tell myself. I still do on days I’m feeling lazy and not in the mood, but it always ends up in a run. I’ll miss you this weekend…wish you could come. Hoping my roomies aren’t crazy axe murderers! Those pics are some of your best btw.

I love this, honestly the words had me so caught up, I rushed right past the pictures. Now I’ll go back and look :) I started a running program and got soo bored, slowed it down to a fast walk, lost more weight, and hurt less. Every now and then, I’ll break into a slight jog just for the fun of it, not sure what caus that lol
