Costa Rica, A Hike and A Swim, Adventure Day part 2

After spending the morning zip lining, and a delicious lunch back at Jungle Camp, we decided to explore the rainforest on the other side of the river.

The only way to get to the other side without getting wet was to take this basket that was suspended across the river. It is used by native Costa Ricans who still live in communities up in remote parts of the rainforest.

It required cooperation.

 And teamwork.

The river was wide, and there were 18 of us. We were trolleyed across one or two at a time.

Austin was like our very own nature guide. He seemed to have an eye for all creatures, big and small. He spotted monkeys and sloth, snakes and spiders and insects. Here, he points out a small, poisonous dart frog. It was amazing how he’d find these little guys, but I know it’s because he’s studied them and knows where to find them.

He always stayed close to the guides. I’m sure he was trying to absorb any and every thing they were willing to share about the rainforest.

Walter led us to a small waterfall with a watering hole. I know, from swimming in the Smoky Mountains, there is nothing that makes you feel more alive than swimming in cold, mountain water. Especially when you realize you are in foreign country. With people you really enjoy.

Teamwork, and shared experiences {especially new and exciting experiences}, have a way of nurturing bonds of friendship.

Stef showed us how to use river rocks to paint our faces.

I found my twitter account Sunday to follow what people were saying about the Superbowl. Somewhere between Christmas and 4 new iphones in the house, I’d lost my twitter app. I eventually found a tweet from my son, so I went to his account to see what else he was tweeting. {Mamas do these things.} There were two that stilled my heart::

21 days ago, on my birthday:

“@findingserendip I hope u have a fantastic birthday. I love you so much and 160 characters isn’t enough to tell u how much u mean to me.:)

and 30 days ago:

“just met a bunch of amazing people that I won’t forget. #amazingweek #costaricarios”
