*****

Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Wooosh!
Baby’s cry pierces dark.
Fear, uncertainty, fatigue,
new.
Soft, warm flesh.
Fingers grasp.
Breath on neck.
Weight on body,
two hearts beat.

Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Wooosh!
First bite, first smile.
First words, first steps.
Rotund belly, robust bottom.
Ten fingers, ten toes.
Soft, dewy hair.
Adoring, unconditional love.
Protective, nurturing love.

Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Wooosh!
First day. First of many first days.
Beginning of
breaking away.
Innocence, happy.
Pride, fear, heartbreak.

Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Wooosh!
Independent.
Friends,
ideas,
thoughts,
desires.
Grasping the hands,
slowing down,
holding back.

Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Wooosh!
Stepping away, becoming.
Achievements, failures.
Adventures, hurts.
Struggles.
Realizing, regretting,
begging it to slow.

Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Wooosh!
Long, lean.
Strong, beautiful.
In their own.
Peeling away,
beating down paths.
Discovering,
dreaming,
planning,
wanting.
Guidance, love, support…
All that’s left.

Tick-tock. Tick-tock.

Tick-tock. Tick-tock.

Tick-tock. Tick-tock.

This was lovely. The first stanza brought back memories of when my babies were small ones and that is all so familiar, breath on the neck and two hearts beating. You wrote this so beautifully!
I’ve got baby fever a-gain!

In time, I’ll know this all. . .
